Nzoia Sugar FC edges Samwest Blackboots amid financial struggles
Nzoia Sugar Football Club clinched a hard-fought 1-0 victory over Samwest Blackboots in a National Super League (NSL) clash held yesterday in Nairobi.
The win, secured by Ian Simiyu’s decisive strike, brought a much-needed morale boost and a slight improvement in the club’s league standing.
The atmosphere was jubilant, with players, coaching staff, and a handful of loyal fans celebrating the crucial result. Head coach Charles Odero described the win as a ray of hope during an otherwise difficult season.
“This victory means a lot to us, especially given the tough financial times we are enduring,” Odero said post-match.
He emphasized the importance of such results in maintaining player motivation and reinforcing the support of financial backers.
“When we win, it reminds our supporters why they believe in us. Their help is vital, and performances like these show their contributions are not in vain,” he added.
However, Nzoia Sugar FC’s struggles extend far beyond the pitch. Speaking to Citizen Digital, club chairman Evance Kadende revealed that the withdrawal of sponsorship from their main backer, Nzoia Sugar Company, has plunged the team into financial disarray.
“The club is a symbol of pride for our region, but without financial backing, our future is uncertain,” Kadende stated.
The team is grappling with unpaid salaries and logistical challenges, operating under severe constraints.
Kadende issued a heartfelt appeal to local leaders, corporate sponsors, and well-wishers to step in and save the club.
“Football is more than just a sport—it is a unifying force and a source of hope for many young players in this region. We need all the help we can get to keep this club alive,” he said.
Despite their victory, Nzoia Sugar FC remains in a precarious position in the NSL standings. Sitting 18th with eight points from eight matches, the team faces a daunting task to escape the relegation zone.
While the win against Samwest Blackboots offers a brief reprieve, the club’s future depends not only on consistent on-field performances but also on securing much-needed financial stability.
