Nzoia stop Tusker as Gor seize top spot
Nzoia Sugar
FC edged Tusker FC 1-0 after a dogged display at the Sudi Stadium, Bungoma on
Saturday as the champions suffered their first defeat in 15 matches.
Tusker last
lost a game in February and had been on a six-match winning streak before it
was shattered at Nzoia who have now thrown themselves back in the title race.
Nzoia got
their winner in the first half through James Kibande’s penalty which was
awarded to the home side after Hassan Beja was fouled inside the box.
The Brewers
began the day as the league leaders but dropped down to second after Gor Mahia
FC won 1-0 at Kenya Police FC thanks to Austine Odhiambo’s second half effort.
Nzoia did
extremely well to hold on to their victory, repulsing Tusker’s attempts with
some resolute defending.
The result
means coach Robert Matano’s men stayed on 54 points, allowing Gor to overtake
them and take a two-point advantage as the new league leaders.
Nzoia added
three points to their tally to sit third on 51 points. Fourth-placed KCB can
draw level on points if they win Sunday’s heavyweight contest against Leopards.
