Nairobi United flexed their National Super League title ambitions with a resounding 6-2 demolition of struggling Mombasa Stars in a thrilling match played at Dandora Stadium on Sunday.

‎The emphatic victory saw Nairobi United - popularly known as the Naibos - stretch their lead at the summit to 52 points, three ahead of second-placed APS Bomet who sit at 49 after 25 matches.

‎Mombasa Stars, who have now sunk deeper into the relegation zone with only 19 points, continue their dismal run, having won just once in their last ten matches - against fellow coastal strugglers Mombasa Elites.

‎The match exploded into action early with Nairobi United dominating proceedings. In the 3rd minute, Duncan Omala, younger brother to Gor Mahia striker Benson Omalla, saw his header fly wide after a short corner routine. Moments later, Omala went down with a knee knock but quickly returned to action.

‎By the 18th minute, Nairobi United had already found the breakthrough, Omala rising to head home from a well-placed corner by Isaac Omweri. Daniel Bichok doubled the lead soon after, finishing a well played free-kick  by Rodgers Angal.

‎Mombasa Stars were largely second-best in the first half, although they came close just before the break through Mwanza Mwema, who failed to test the keeper with a scuffed shot. The half ended 2-0 in favour of the hosts.

‎The second half saw a brief resurgence from the visitors. A penalty converted by Rogers Okumu and a goal  leveled the score at 2-2, stunning the home crowd.

‎But Nairobi United responded like true title contenders. Rogers Angal provided yet another assist as Isaac Omweri weaved past the Mombasa defence to restore the lead. Duncan Omala then hit the post before grabbing his second goal of the match, taking advantage of Michael Karamor's clever setup.

‎There was no stopping the Naibos after that. Michael Jairoh made it 5-2, again assisted by Karamor, before the provider turned scorer with a sixth goal that sealed a brutal evening for the coastal side.

‎Mombasa Stars coach Hussein Mohammed lamented fatigue, saying:

‎"The game was bad. We tried hard but I think fatigue today was the thing. We tried to avoid free-kicks but that's what happened. We know we’re not in a safe place, but I believe we will move out of the relegation zone by winning our remaining matches," said Mohammed.

‎Nairobi United tactician Edwin Mwaura praised his side’s mentality:

‎"We thank God for the win. Coming from 2-0, then 2-2, and winning 6-2 shows mental strength and character. The players are focused and deserve all the praise."
