NSL: Mombasa United, Muhoroni Youth battle to a one-all draw
Mombasa United were on Monday afternoon held to a 1-1 draw
by a resilient Muhoroni Youth in a National Super League match staged at Serani
Grounds in Mombasa.
Muhoroni Youth took the lead in the 12th minute when Mark
Otieno hammered in a low shot from inside the box after a defensive lapse from
Mombasa United, beating goalkeeper Kevin Tila.
However just 30 seconds into the second half, United found
the equalizer through Answar Shamuni, who capitalized on a defensive mix-up in
the Muhoroni Youth backline following a powerful corner from Wilberforce
Lugogo.
United continued to press for a winner in the second half
but squandered several good opportunities and had to settle for a draw at home.
In a post-match reflection, Mombasa United head coach Hamadi
Said expressed his satisfaction with the point despite aiming for three.
“It was a game of two halves,” said Said. “Muhoroni Youth
dominated the first half with their long balls and we conceded. In the second
half, we were more positive and created many chances, but overall, I think it
was a good game for us.”
His opposite number Ibrahim Anjiri praised his team’s
fighting spirit.
“We are grateful for the draw and will use it as a stepping
stone going forward. We’re currently undergoing technical changes, and we
believe they will have a positive impact,” said Anjiri.
United remain 15th on the NSL table with 20 points, while
Muhoroni Youth are still in the danger zone, at position 18, with 13 points.
