Reigning FKF-Premier League champions Gor Mahia are convinced that the current standings on the log does not reflect their capability, hence no need for alarm, even as Police FC and Tusker FC continue to display fine form.
Gor’s team manager Victor Nyaoro says the league is like a
Marathon and not a relay, noting that the eventual winner will out-sprint and
overpower other contenders towards the end of the race.
‘’This league is like a Marathon. You can command the race
in front but get out-sprinted towards the end. We are watching the table leaders
keenly,’’ said Nyaoro.
Gor Mahia dropped two points over the weekend in Mumias
against Kakamega Homeboyz, leaving Police and Tusker FC to sit jointly atop the log on 36 points apiece.
K’Ogalo sit third on
the log on 28 points, eight shy of Police and Tusker , who are only separated
by goal difference, and Nyaoro says it is too early to determine the eventual
winners.
‘’We are not yet halfway…
we can still re-energize and hit our mission of winning the third consecutive
title.’’
Police FC leapt to
the summit last weekend courtesy of a 1-0 win over debutants Mara Sugar. The
slim win helped them dislodge Tusker FC on goal difference.
Tusker was equally favoured in their game against Ulinzi
emerging the victors courtesy of the sole Chris Erambo’s 55th minute strike.
Last week, Gor Mahia
CEO Raymond Oruo hinted at a possible recruitment of a lethal striker, a
midfielder and a goalkeeper. It is reported that a Burundian striker [name
withheld], is in the country for talks with the local giants.
The towering striker
is reportedly joining Gor Mahia during the upcoming transfer window which opens
on January31.
‘’We are in the
process of identifying a lethal striker, a midfielder, a right back and
goalkeeper, since we have seen laxities in these areas,’’ Said Oruo in an
earlier interview.
The team’s former right back Dennis Njire is back in
training with the after a season’s spell with Zambian giants Zanaco FC. He is
one of the potential players to be absorbed in the transfer window.
The team recently extended contracts of two long serving
players, Philemon Otieno and Ernest Wendo, both whose contracts were to expire
this January.
Team head coach Zedekiah ‘Zico’ Otieno had earlier hinted at
bolstering his squad to ensure they meet their season’s target, which is
nothing short of winning the title for the 22nd time.
They next play
against Mathare United on February 1 before facing fellow contenders , Tusker
FC, on February 8.
