Nanjala hits top gear in Moroccan league despite her team’s slow start
Harambee Starlets' forward Violet Wanyonyi Nanjala is enjoying a fine season at Municipal De Laayoune, despite Laayoune's bumpy ride in Morocco Women’s Premier League.
The 24-year-old
provided yet another assist for her team as they registered their second win of
the season in the 2-0 rout of Wydad Athletic on Sunday, a game she relished.
“Wydad is a good
side and we knew it would be difficult to get a point but we put our best foot
forward and won the game. I’m glad to have gotten an assist against them,” she
said.
It was Nanjala’s
seventh assist in six games with four goals added to her name this season.
This comes as
her club struggles to find the right footing in the league having amassed seven
points out of a possible 18.
The Harambee
Starlets prodigy is aiming at replicating her two previous seasons’ form where
she has been one of the club’s most consistent goalpoachers, notching 43 goals.
The 23 goals
came into her debut season in 2022/23 season, in which she emerged as
Moroccan’s league top-scorer while helping her side finish third on the log. This
was an improvement to the 20 goals she bagged last season.
“I love my
progress so far. I have to continue working hard and I’m looking forward to
leaving a mark in my last season at the club.”
The former
Vihiga Queens’ attacker still believes she’ll end up in Europe when the season
culminates and hopes clubs will come knocking at her door for her services.
Nanjala returned
to the North African giants in mid-September after her planned move to the
Israel Women’s Premier League fell through due to escalating security concerns
amid the ongoing Israel-Hamas conflict.
