Nairobi Titans became
the first team to win a match in the inaugural Nairobi Provincial Cricket
Association (NPCA) Women’s League which got underway at Ruaraka Sports Club
over the weekend.
Buoyed by Sajni Shah, Mirali Fof and Yesha Desai, the Titans beat Silver
Cheetah by 8 wickets in the opening match of the weekend, as teams took to the
crease for the Association’s maiden women’s league which has attracted ladies
from 8 teams.
Despite their loss to the Titans, Silver Cheetahs produced the Most valuable
Player (MVP) in Nisha Kerai (not out) who was also the match’s top scorer with
33 runs off 31 deliveries.
The Cheetahs won the toss and opted to bat first, scoring 84 for 1 in 20.0
overs. In reply, the Titans carried the day with 85 for 2 in only 8.0 overs.
But Titan’s Captain
and opener Akshi Shah could only manage 9 runs off 9 balls before being caught
out by Anshi Bhanderi. Fof, on the other hand, scored 13 runs off 21 balls before
being caught out by Dhrum Rabadia.
After the match Titan’s batter Sajni Shah said: “It was a good pitch. We batted
second and won, the ball was not hitting the boundaries though, so we tried to
get as many runs as possible. We got a couple of wides, but overall, it was a
good game. It feels good to start the league with a win and we hope to keep
that energy going for the future matches as well.”
Asked what the team’s strategy will be going forward, Sajni continued: “We
really have to work on our bowling; I honestly feel we gave away many wides, so
will we try, especially in the next few games, to remedy the undoing. We’ll try
working on our batting, get a few boundaries; I think there were none in this game,
but yes, we keep the same spirit moving forward.”
Most Valuable player, Nisha Kerai on her part said: “Unfortunately, we didn’t
do good bowling, it was very hard, but then again, you live to fight another
day. We will have to improve on our bowling and fielding, very important for
the team.”
