In a thrilling Kenya National Basketball League (KNBL) encounter, Nairobi City Thunder showcased their dominance with an emphatic 85-59 victory against Ulinzi Warriors at Nyayo Stadium on Friday night.

The game that started at 8pm was a display of sharp offense, cohesive teamwork, and tactical precision by the Thunder side.

Thunder, the only team that will be representing Kenya at the Elite 16 round of the Basketball Africa League (BAL) from Thursday, set the tone early, leading at the end of the first quarter. They maintained their momentum, widening the gap in the second quarter. By halftime, Thunder had a clear upper hand, leaving Ulinzi Warriors struggling to keep pace.

The third quarter was the turning point, as Thunder outscored Ulinzi 28-16, establishing an unassailable lead. Despite Ulinzi's efforts to stage a comeback in the final quarter, Thunder held strong, closing the game with a solid defensive performance and limiting Ulinzi to just 15 points while adding 16 to their tally.

Nairobi City Thunder’s standout players included Derrick Ogechi who led the scoring charts with consistent baskets, and Larry Shavanga who controlled the pace of the game with his sharp passing and solid defense.

James Mwangi and Faheem Guinia also contributed significantly to the team’s offensive output, ensuring the Thunder maintained pressure throughout.

Speaking after the game, Thunder’s head coach Bradley Ibs highlighted the importance of maintaining focus in critical moments.

"Our team executed the game plan perfectly. We played as a unit, and everyone contributed to this win. This is the level of intensity we need to maintain as we move forward in the league and now that BAL 16 is here."

Ulinzi Warriors' coach acknowledged the challenge posed by Thunder but emphasised the need for improvement: "It was a tough game. Thunder capitalised on our mistakes, but we will regroup and come back stronger."

With this win, Nairobi City Thunder cement their position as top contender in the KNBL. The team’s performance sends a strong message to their rivals as they aim for the championship title.
