Mwatate United reinstated to the NSL

Mwatate United have been reinstated to the National Super League (NSL) by the Football Kenya Federation (FKF) while Dimba Patriots have lost their status in the second tier league.

The move follows a protracted legal battle pitting the two clubs that stemmed from alleged irregular takeover of Mwatate United by Dimba Patriots.

“The Football Kenya Federation (FKF) confirms the immediate suspension of Dimba Patriots FC from the FKF National Super League (NSL), following a ruling by the FKF Leagues and Competitions Committee (LCC),” read part of the FKF statement.

Dimba Patriots will be expunged from the league with the 2024/2025 season fixture results involving the team have also been nullified.

“The decision follows a comprehensive review by the LCC, which considered all submissions related to the club’s status in the league.”

The Voi-based Mwatate United will participate in the 2025/2026 season subject to full compliance with mandatory registration and license requirements.

“FKF reiterates its commitment to upholding the integrity of all league competitions, ensuring that all decisions affecting the FKF leagues are made transparently and in accordance with the federation’s statutes and rules.”

The battle began in September 2023 after Mwatate claimed the process of merging the two teams did not follow their constitution and that the officials who sanctioned it were not legally mandated to do so.

Mwatate successfully appealed to the Sports Disputes Tribunal (SDT) but the ruling was quashed by a Machakos High Court in November last year, allowing Dimba Patriots to continue with life in the second tier.
