Mwamba RFC allay crisis fears amid Kenya Cup winless run

Mwamba RFC assistant coach Joseph Baabu has moved to allay fears regarding the team’s poor performance in the current campaign of the Kenya Cup, saying ‘they are not in crisis.’

Mwamba are yet to register any win in the first five matches that has also included giants Kabras Sugar, KCB and Menengai Oilers, opponents Baabu says his side cannot match thanks to their heavy investment.

“There is nothing that is ailing the team. We have been working on our play but we can consider the strength of our team is not the same as the strength of other teams. That one we’ve to admit.

“We’ve been playing KCB, Oilers, Kabras and they’re heavy on investment and I think we are going now to face teams that are now somehow our level in terms of investment and then now we can see whether the plans we've put in place are working or not.”

Baabu has however assured their fans that they are expecting a turnaround of form, starting this weekend when they host South Coast Pirates.

“Basically we've told our players to learn how to win games. At times in rugby there is a point for every game being played, not only when you're winning. When you draw or lose with a certain margin, when you score a certain number of tries, four tries attract one point, when you lose within a 7-point margin there is a point so it’s a matter of understanding how to win and not only going for games.

“Looking at the table right now, we have like five teams with less than ten points and that’s just two wins, so we are optimistic that by the time we travel to Kisumu and the period for enterprise (Cup), we will have changed the table,” he added.

The tactician, who doubles up as the head coach of their ladies’ side, however warned against underestimating Pirates, who will be gassed up after winning their last fixture against Strathmore Leos.

“First of all they will be travelling which is a bit of a disadvantage for them. I know they are coming psyched up since they won their game against Strathmore. We've watched their game and I know they’ve watched how we play but for us we will just stick to our game plan. We are not going to focus on how they’re playing rather we are going to focus on our principles.

“For this game and the next one (against Kisumu RFC) we will step on them just as we discussed with our players; go out there, express yourselves and go for maximum.”
