Mwamba Ladies put Suburbs on notice ahead of Kenya Cup finale
Mwamba Ladies RFC will be looking to secure
their third Kenya Cup title in a row as they face Northern Suburbs in the final
at the RFUEA grounds in Nairobi.
Mwamba who are unbeaten this season put on an
explosive performance to demolish Shamberere Ladies 81-0 in the semi final and
the Joseph Baabu led team, will be looking to make history by being the first
ladies Kenya Cup side to go full season unscathed.
Baabu says the fine thus far gives the players
the motivation they need ahead of the Suburbs clash.
“We have a very big morale and psych for the
weekend because the last time we played Suburbs we weren’t at our very best;
there are times the team just doesn’t click but this time we have very big
morale.
“We want to put Suburbs at their place; we get
the win and secure the Kenya Cup for the third time in a row,” said Baabu.
Baabu has attributed their Kenya Cup dominance
to hard work in training and support from the club.
“In terms of playing, this season Mwamba has
been dominant and we are going unbeaten. If we win the Kenya cup this weekend
we shall have gone unbeaten which is something that has never happened; again
another history coming in as no other team has won the Kenya Cup for three
consecutive years since the league (Women Kenya Cup) was inaugurated.
“It just shows hard work pays, if you put in
the hard work you will get the results. So as we are going for the trophy we
appreciate all the games that we have played, some were hard others better but
overall our hard work has paid off.”
Baabu who also helps out with the Mwamba Men’s
team added the new Women’s Kenya cup league format doesn’t spice up competition
despite adding the number of teams participating in the league.
“Because of finances, we have two conferences,
Nairobi conference and the Western conferences which yes it’s easier for teams
but personally I would have preferred we play home and away or a round robin
format where we play all the teams in the league; that way we would have gotten
very competitive play offs.
“It has however not been easy especially
because the ladies don’t have sponsors, so getting transport, training and
other expenses becomes very hard.”
Northern Suburbs defeated Rongo University
side 29-09 to book their final berth against Mwamba.
The final kicks off at 4:00pm local time at
the RFUEA grounds along Ngong Road – Nairobi.
