Mwakio: Pirates' historic victory sparks optimism for Kenya Cup campaign

South Coast Pirates forward Evans Mwakio was overjoyed after leading his team to a historic 18-08 victory over Strathmore Leos at the Seacrest International Grounds in Diani, Kwale County, yesterday.

The Pirates, who are in their debut season in the top-tier Kenya Cup league, had endured a tough start, failing to win in their previous four matches.

In a spirited post-match interview with Citizen Digital, Mwakio, a teacher by profession, expressed his delight at the team’s first-ever Kenya Cup win.

“It’s such a great feeling after suffering four straight defeats. This win is a big motivation for us as we head into the second half of the season energized and hopeful for more victories,” Mwakio shared.

The hard-fought triumph has not only boosted the team’s morale but also highlighted the dedication of the players, coaching staff, and supporters.

Mwakio acknowledged the importance of the win in rewarding everyone who has stood by the team during their challenging start to the season.

“This is for everyone who believed in us and for the boys who’ve put in the work during training,” he said, emphasizing the collective effort behind the historic achievement.

Looking ahead to their next game against Mwamba RFC, Mwakio underscored the team’s commitment to building on their momentum. He reassured fans that the Pirates are determined to keep improving.

“Against Mwamba this coming weekend, we’ll work even harder in training and trust the guidance of our technical bench,” he stated confidently.

In the match, Devin Abuga’s two tries and Kelly Akengo’s penalty provided the points the Pirates needed to secure the win. The Diani-based team will now shift their focus to Mwamba RFC, a side still searching for their first victory in the league.
