Sports Cabinet Secretary Salim Mvurya on Thursday paid a courtesy visit to the Junior Starlets camp as they prepare to face Cameroon in the final round of the FIFA U-17 Women’s World Cup qualifiers.

Mvurya, flanked by newly appointed Principal Secretary Elijah Mwangi and Football Kenya Federation (FKF) President Hussein Mohammed underscored the Government’s commitment in supporting the girls to ensure they qualify for the World Cup.

The two-legged qualifiers are slated for between 18-20 April for the first leg, while the return leg is scheduled between 25-27 April in Yaoundé, as Kenya charges to qualify for the second time in a row after their 2024 debut in the Dominican Republic.

“The President’s pledge is to identify grassroots talent and this team demonstrates our commitment to searching for and nurturing young players. Apart from enhancing sports facility in the county, we are keen on developing talents. I believe with the 100 percent backing from the Government, the team fulfills its dream,” said Mvurya.

Head Coach Mildred Cheche, who also oversaw Kenya’s qualification in the last edition, said the camp will be full by close of business Friday.

“We have few players in the camp because most of them are doing their exams in school but by Friday (today evening EAT), we are hoping that they will have joined. We are looking forward for success against Cameroon, building from our victory in the previous stage over Uganda,” averred Cheche.

The team’s skipper Lorine Ilvonga said hitting the camp early will shape them up ahead of the final stage of the qualifier.

“The morale in camp is high and the team at large is eager to give it their best and qualify for the global showpiece.”

Starlets hit the camp on Thursday, March 27 after a week’s break. On Thursday 10 players arrived at Stadion Hotel in Nairobi, where the squad will be based.

Kenya is scheduled to play Morocco as part of their preparation for the match against Cameroon.

FKF Vice President McDonald Mariga and Secretary General Harold Ndege were also present.
