Mvurya: Kasarani to host test matches starting June

Renovation works ongoing at the Kasarani International Stadium. The stadium is one of the three facilities that Kenya will use to host the CHAN 2025 and AFCON 2027 matches.

The Cabinet Secretary Ministry of Youth, Creative Economy and Sports Salim Mvurya has hinted that starting June, test matches will be staged at the Moi Sports Center Kasarani Stadium as the African Nations Championship (CHAN) slated for August draws near.

Mvuyra was speaking during an inspection tour on Monday at the stadium where he was briefed on the renovation progress at the stadium that is among those commissioned to host the tournament.

According to Mvurya, the test matches will provide an avenue for the "hungry" football fans to fill their eagerness even as preparations for CHAN nears completion.

"In fact we have already said that every other match that is going to be played whether international match will be moved here, so from June we should be seeing more of test matches at this ground just to make sure that what we have seen in the two matches (Kenya vs Gabon tie and Mashemeji Derby) is that football is back in the country and Kenyans are inspired so we will have matches here soon."

Mvurya, who was flanked by the Cabinet Secretary Ministry of Defence Soipan Tuya in the midmorning inspections, expressed satisfaction with the ongoing work.

Mvurya at the same time has dismissed speculations that the contractor overseeing reconstruction of the Kipchoge Keino Stadium in Eldoret has withdrawn.

"I saw it this morning and I was surprised, but we had already sorted the contractor at Kipchoge Keino. In fact the money hit his account last Friday and therefore there is no reason to worry about it. The work continues, this time round to completion,” averred Mvurya.

On her part, CS Tuya urged fans to be responsible when handling stadium facilities, to avoid unnecessary expensive renovations.

"We need to be responsible, take part in ensuring that we also take care of these facilities once they are complete.  Some of the facilities that we are working on tirelessly now are in bad state because of our fans. We really have to be responsible,” she underlined.
