Kenya Rugby Union chairman Sasha Mutai has appealed to Kenya Cup finalists Kabras RFC and Menengai Oilers not to field their national sevens team players in Saturday’s highly anticipated final, to allow them time to recover from recent international duty.

The two sides are set to clash tomorrow at the ASK Showground in Kakamega in what promises to be one of the most thrilling encounters in Kenyan rugby.

Mutai’s plea comes just days after the Shujaa squad returned to the country on Wednesday night from the Singapore Sevens.

With the Los Angeles leg of the World Rugby Sevens Series coming up, Mutai believes the players deserve adequate rest.

“The boys gave their best in Hong Kong and Singapore. They are understandably tired and need time to recover as they prepare for Los Angeles,” said Mutai.

“I am kindly requesting the two finalists not to field them this weekend and allow them to rest ahead of next month’s assignment.”

Mutai also expressed gratitude to Tusker for sponsoring this season’s Kenya Cup, saying the partnership has boosted morale among players and elevated the tournament's stature.

“This sponsorship is a huge boost for the competition. We are grateful to Tusker for their continued support of Kenyan rugby. I look forward to working with them and welcoming more sponsors in the future. I can assure them the returns will be worthwhile for all parties,” he added.

Saturday’s final is a repeat of the 2022 showdown, where Kabras edged Oilers 34-28 to claim their second Kenya Cup title.

“We are expecting a great game. These two teams play exciting, competitive rugby,” said Mutai. “As Union chairman, I support all rugby teams in the country. I urge fans to turn up in large numbers and enjoy the final."
