Musonye shines in five-star performance as Oilers crush Mwamba in Nakuru

Menengai Oilers' eighth man, Elkeams Musonye, stole the spotlight with a scintillating five-try performance in his first start of the season.

The Oilers demolished Mwamba RFC 94-9 in a Kenya Cup round four match at The Refinery, Nakuru County.

Speaking to Citizen Digital after the match, Musonye attributed the emphatic victory to teamwork and a strong preseason.

“We had a great preseason, and the coaches ensured we addressed our weaknesses while improving on what was already working for us,” Musonye said.

“It was great hosting Mwamba at home; they deserve our respect. Being on the score sheet was a team effort, and I’m truly grateful for it.”

The forward stressed the importance of maintaining focus and taking the season one match at a time.

“As a team, our focus is on continuous improvement, taking every match as it comes,” he added.

On a personal note, Musonye revealed his ambition to secure a place in Kenya Simba's squad for the 2027 Rugby World Cup qualifiers, which kick off next year.

“My goal is to better myself and help the team achieve its objectives. I’m also working hard to put myself in a position to represent my country in the World Cup qualifiers,” he shared.

The match marked the Oilers' fourth consecutive victory in this Kenya Cup campaign. The Gibson Weru-coached side displayed their attacking prowess early, thrilling their home fans with an all-around dominant performance.

Youngster Brian Achacha and Kenya Simba winger Beldad Ogeta scored two tries each, while Timothy Okwemba, Destirous Ifedha, Chrispine Shitundo, and Amos Obaeh added one try apiece. Abutwalib Wesonga’s conversions sealed the comprehensive win.

Elsewhere in the Kenya Cup, defending champions Kabras Sugar annihilated a struggling Kisumu RFC side 137-7 in Kakamega. Former champions KCB registered a commanding 43-8 win over Strathmore Leos in Ruaraka.

Kenya Harlequins edged Blak Blad 28-23 in a thrilling last-minute victory, while Impala RFC secured their first win of the season, defeating newcomers South Coast Fives 30-22 under the guidance of coach Luis Kisia.

The action-packed weekend showcased the intensity of the Kenya Cup, with teams battling fiercely for supremacy in the league standings.
