Women's marathon record holder Ruth Chepngetich says more is to come from her after she broke the world record on Sunday in Chicago.

Chepngetich took almost two minutes off the world record, winning the race in 2:09:56, and she believes she can only get better.

“The race was amazing I really like racing here, I have run here four times and I am happy to have broken the record in this course,’she said. ‘ I expect to keep on improving and doing better in the coming races.”

The Kenyan broke the previous record - 2:11:53 - that was set in Berlin last year by Ethiopian Tigist Assefa and the record holder says it was down to hard work and tactical discipline, noting that the good weather in Chicago contributed to the excellent result.

“I did some great preparation with my team,” she explained. “The discipline that has to be put on in order to win such races must be great, and I am happy to have seen the fruit of my hard work,” added Chepngetich.

Chepngetich who has won three times in Chicago dedicated the win to the fallen men’s marathon record holder, Kelvin Kiptum, saying his spirit kept them going during the race.

“We ran with him in our mind because he was a great friend of ours and we had to do it for him and we are happy to have made him proud where he is resting …,” stated Chepngetich.
