KCB RFC assistant coach Andrew Amonde has heaped praise on
new signing George ‘Japolo’ Ooro, who recently joined the club from Strathmore
Leos, where he spent the last four years.
Amonde says Ooro’s experience — especially as captain of the
national sevens team — will be instrumental in the development of KCB RFC. He
believes the seasoned player will play a key role in mentoring younger talents
within the squad.
“He’s in a class of his own. George is experienced and
brings strong tactical awareness to the team. His leadership as the Kenyan
Sevens captain will be invaluable in mentoring our upcoming players. He’ll be a
big asset to the team,” said Amonde.
Over the weekend, KCB RFC kicked off the 2025 National
Sevens Circuit on a high note, edging out Strathmore Leos 15-14 in a thrilling
final to win the first leg. Amonde credited the win to the team’s collective
effort and unity.
“That win was a good start for us. It gives the squad
momentum heading into the next leg in Nakuru. The players are motivated and
committed to continuous improvement,” he added.
The second leg of the circuit takes place this coming weekend
in Nakuru, where KCB RFC have been pooled alongside Nondescripts, Catholic
Monks, and invitational side Kisumu RFC.
The former Shujaa captain emphasized the need for
consistency and focus, noting that every opponent will be out to challenge the
defending champions.
“We’re taking it one game at a time, treating each match
like a final. We know every team will be training hard to beat us, but our goal
is to maintain our high standards and stay competitive,” Amonde concluded.
