Morans off to Angola for Afrocan Championships
The national
men's basketball team head coach Cliff Owuor has named a 12-man squad that will
represent Kenya at the upcoming 2023 FIBA Afrocan Championships scheduled for
July 8-16 in Luanda, Angola.
Morans travelled
on Thursday for the continental tournament where they are pooled in Group A
alongside Gabon and Cote d’Ivoire.
Group B
includes home team Angola, Nigeria and Mali while Group C includes Morocco,
Tunisia and Rwanda. Champions DRC Congo are in group D alongside Mozambique and
Cameroon.
The squad
comprises seven local league players, two foreign based, two that play in
Africa leagues and one unattached.
According to
the rules and regulations of the tournament, at least 50% of the players should
be playing in local leagues and only two foreign-based are allowed while the
rest can be playing in other Africa leagues.
The
delegation comprises 12 players and eight officials.
This is the
second edition of the championship, the first edition was held in 2019 Bamako,
Mali where Kenya lost the final to DRC Congo. There was a last minute change as
assistant head coach Sadat Gaya who doubles up as Thunder head coach was
dropped and replaced by Ancetas Wafula.
