Mogunde thirsts for more wins after Kinshasa heroics

New African light-middleweight champion Boniface Mogunde believes that securing Kenya’s first gold in seven years is a huge statement of intent for Kenyan boxing.

Mogunde won on a split points decision against Burundi’s Nestor Nduwarugira at the African Boxing Championships held at the Stade des Martyrs in Kinshasa, DR Congo last weekend.

“From what I saw in Kinshasa, my level of competitiveness has improved tremendously," he said. "If we continue this strong partnership with our coaches, I believe we’ll see even more victories in future tournaments.”

This victory also reinforced Mogunde’s edge over Nduwarugira, whom he previously defeated in the Zone 3 tournament held in Kinshasa two years ago.

His recent gold adds to an already impressive record, including a bronze medal he won in 2022 in Maputo, silver medal at the 2021 African Zone 3 Championships – Kinshasa and the 2019 All Africa Games- Rabat, Morocco.

Kenya’s performance in Kinshasa outpaced some of its closest competitors.

Senegal, finishing fourth, earned one gold, one silver, and two bronze medals, while Cameroon secured fifth place with one gold and one bronze.

Congo Brazzaville, with one silver and three bronze medals, also showed competitive strength.

Mogunde’s win has ignited hopes for Kenya’s boxing future, and his confidence points to a new era where Kenyan athletes aim for top honors in African and international boxing arenas.
