Mixed results for Kenya beach volleyball teams in Olympic qualifiers
Kenya’s women beach volleyball pair of
Gaudencia Makokha and Naomie Too kicked off the FIVB Beach Volley Continental
Cup cum Olympic qualifiers Friday afternoon in style, strolling past Gambia's pair of Isatou Secka
and Ginadou Mariama 2-0 at Kabila Beach in Tetouan, Morocco.
The 2019 African Cup of Nations silver
medalists dominated the court as they spanked the West African side 21-9 and
21-16 in the two-set game.
The Kenyan pair will now clash with Nigeria in
the last match of pool B on Friday as they chase a quarter final berth.
At the same time, the men's pair of Brian Melly and
Edward Kibet had a terrible start in their quest for the Olympic ticket as they
suffered a double defeat in the hands of Mauritius and Cameroon.
In the first match staged at midday Melly and
Kibet were shocked by Mauritius’ pair of Alfred Gilbert and David Carcasse 2-0
(21-16, 21-16).
Things got worse in the second match as they
saw the hopes of qualifying for the knock-out stages become slim after losing
2-0 (21-18, 21-17) to Cameroon’s pair of Obenda and Nsangou.
Melly and Kibet will now have to win their
remaining matches against Togo and Botswana if they are to go past the group
stages.
Makokha and Too eye their second successive
Olympic ticket as Melly and Kibet attempt their maiden appearance at the summer
games.
