Midfielder Kevin Wangaya has Rising Stars dreaming of AFCON U20 glory

Kenya Under20 midfielder Kevin Wangaya is optimistic about Rising Stars chances as they gear up for their maiden appearance at the Under20 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON), set to kick off from April 26 to May 18 in Cairo, Egypt.

Wangaya, who has been a standout performer in the team’s camp, says the squad has made significant progress in training and is focused on making the nation proud on the continental stage.

“Based on how we are preparing, we know what we want to achieve at the tournament. We’re asking for prayers and support from our fans as we work hard to defend the honor of our flag,” said Wangaya.

“Our target is to reach the knockout stages, push for the semi-finals or finals, and ultimately secure a ticket to the World Cup.”

Rising Stars, as the team is known, are currently in a residential camp, fine-tuning their tactics ahead of the tournament that has attracted 13 teams.

Head coach Salim Babu is expected to name his final 23-man squad from the current 30 players in camp.

The squad has received a major boost with the arrival of Netherlands-based goalkeeper Caleb Obida Kramer of ADO Den Haag U21, and midfielder Zech Obiero, who plays for English League One side Leyton Orient.

Wangaya praised Obiero’s adaptation since joining the squad, particularly in developing chemistry with his teammates.

“He’s a talented player. The only thing we’re polishing is his combination play, which we’ve been working on during training. Training together has allowed us to guide him on the system, what to improve, and how to blend with the rest of the team. He’s definitely grown compared to when he first arrived,” he added.

Obiero has already featured in two friendly matches against FKF Premier League sides Kariobangi Sharks and Kenya Police U20, showing glimpses of his potential.

Kenya is drawn in a challenging Group C alongside holders Senegal, Zambia, and Sierra Leone.

Before heading to Cairo, the team will jet out for a 10-day training camp in Morocco to sharpen their claws as they seek to push for a historic run in their first-ever AFCON U20 campaign.

Four best teams will book tickets for the 2025 FIFA Under-20 World Cup that will be held in Chile from 27 September-19 October, 2025.
