The coastal city has not been a good hunting ground for Oilers, and former Kenya Simba’s fly half Ominde is keen on changing the fortunes.
He says the team is focused and determined to make a strong start.
“We had a poor outing in Mombasa last season. It’s true that we have struggled in Driftwood 7s. We want to make amends early on. We want to make a statement of intent.”
The Nakuru-based side has intensified training ahead of the tournament, aiming to build early momentum.
In 2023, Oilers came agonizingly close to the Driftwood title but fell short in the finals, losing to Kabras.
“The team is in high spirits. We have had great training sessions. Though we missed out on playing in any pre-season tournament, I believe my boys are in great shape to hit the ground running.”
The 2002 national circuit winners had hoped to fine tune their game at the Ruff N Tuff tournament but could not feature as the tournament was only meant to feature the community based sides.
Ominde exuded confidence in his side which majorly consists of U-20 players.
“We are banking on our young players. Most of the squad is under 20 and they’ve shown great promise. The much experienced players will lead the team. It will be a good blend of youth and experience. “He commented.
The tactician made warning shots that they will be aiming to better their fourth place finish last year.
“Our intention is clear; we have to improve on our season’s finish from last year. We were fourth and our aim is to go even higher this season and hopefully match our success in 2022.Ever game, every leg counts and we have to start on the right foot in Mombasa.”
Among the new faces to watch out for include Kenya Under-20 stars Daniel Kipchirchir, Brian Achacha, Wilson Tonya, Justus Lunale, and Benedict Muiruri.
