Speaking in a press conference at Nyayo Stadium, the South African coach confirmed no player was added to the camp without his knowledge, contrary to claims that surfaced earlier in the week on social media.
Reports had stated that forwards John Mark Makwata of Bandari FC, Clinton Kinanga of Kenya Police and Posta Rangers’ Kevin Etemesi had been called up to the team and immediately sent back after one training session with the team.
“There’s been talk that players were called up without my knowledge, that’s completely false,” McCarthy said. “I’ve been fully involved in every decision. Only one player was added to the initial squad, and that was done in consultation with the technical bench.”
Bandari striker Felix Oluoch was the only late addition to the team after impressing the coach in a friendly match which he starred for Karibangi Sharks Combined against Harambee Stars.
“I am in charge of Harambee Stars, the players that are here in camp have always been here, nothing goes on without my consent.”
The tactician also defended Kenya’s withdrawal from the Cecafa Four-Nation Tournament that is ongoing in Arusha, Tanzania last weekend.
McCarthy cited poor conditions of the training ground allocated to Harambee Stars as the key reason for pulling out of the competition at the last minute.
“The training ground we were given was substandard. We couldn’t risk injuries at this crucial stage. We need the right environment to prepare properly for CHAN,” he stated.
Despite not playing any major friendly match ahead of CHAN, the Harambee Stars boss says that he believes his side are in the best spirit and have hit top form.
“I am confident in the fitness level of the team despite not taking part in the four nations, Bajaber is the only concern now but he is slowly reintegrating with the main team after initially doing personal training by the sides.”
The national team is now expected to continue its preparations in Nairobi as they gear up for their CHAN opener against DRC Congo on August 3 at Kasarani Stadium.
