Mashemeji Derby: Football triumphs over jitters; millions raised in revenue

Kenyan football fans rekindled their passion for local football as thousands thronged Nyayo National Stadium for the Mashemeji Derby between AFC Leopards and Gor Mahia on Sunday.

Despite earlier concerns over security, political tensions, and a history of fan clashes, the game unfolded in an unexpected atmosphere of peace, tranquility and celebration, drowning the jitters and fears that was palpable in the build-up to the game.

The highly anticipated fixture saw an impressive turnout, generating Ksh 7.8 million in ticket sales. Fans, draped in their respective team colours, flooded the streets of Nairobi Central Business District, creating a carnival-like atmosphere as they marched from the Kenya National Archives and Nation Centre towards the stadium. Chants, songs, and unwavering team spirit replaced the usual pre-match hostility, signalling a renewed sense of sportsmanship.

Security was a key concern in the build-up to the clash, with authorities issuing stern warnings against hooliganism, stone-throwing and pitch invasions. The presence of high-profile politicians from Western and Nyanza regions, including former Prime Minister Raila Odinga, Eugene Wamalwa, and Peter Salasya, heightened the stakes, given their differing political affiliations. Mumias East Member of Parliament Peter Salasya had faced public backlash following a scuffle at the Harambee Stars’ recent match against Gabon.

However fans defied expectations by maintaining decorum throughout the event. The only notable security incident occurred outside the stadium, where police were forced to disperse a chaotic crowd with teargas during ticket verification.

On the pitch, the electrifying pre-match energy failed to translate into goals. Both teams played cautiously, resulting in a goalless draw that left fans yearning for more but satisfied with the newfound orderliness.
