Mara Sugar make history, crush Silibwet 4-0 to earn promotion to KPL

National Super League side Mara Sugar FC on Saturday made history by qualifying for the Kenyan Premier League for the very first time, after beating Silibwet Leons 4-0 at the Awendo Green Stadium in Migori.

Their promotion has been long coming. In the 2023-24 season they have been one of the best sides. From 35 matches they have won 24, drawing 6 and losing 5 to accumulate 78 points.

They have three matches left to the conclusion of this season's National Super League campaign.

The team's technical director, Boniface Ambani, is over the moon.

"This [team] begun as corporate social responsibility and now see, we're in the KPL. For us there is no celebration, we are still fighting for the title and that is where the focus is," Ambani said, in reference to the fight for the gong where they are facing a strong challenge from Mathare United, second on the log on 74 points.

Mara becomes the first team from Masailand to grace the KPL.
