The Kakamega-based school edged out 2023 East Africa champions Namwela Boys in the Western region semi-finals before defeating Butula Boys 3-2 sets to lift the regional title earlier this month.

In the semi-finals, the five-time national champions held their nerves to win 3-2 sets against Namwela of Bungoma County who for the first time since 2019 failed to defend their regional title.

Malava are the only school from Western Kenya to have won the national volleyball glory in 2007, 2008, 2010, 2015 and 2018.

“We are going for the title because we are the pride of western. The only team from this region to have won the trophy and now that we are playing at home I believe we have what it takes to reclaim it,” said Tovoko.

Tovoko attributed their good run to great systems the school has put in place to develop talent.

“We have laid down a great system since 1999. We know how to make players better because we have the talent and have the methods of improving them and creating great teams even after some have left after clearing high school.”

The veteran tactician, who has been in charge of the team for a long time went on to stress on the importance of taking one game at a time.

“We will take one game at a time and treat each like a final we know very well the level of competition is going to be high and that is why we have to be perfect in every department and not underestimate any opponent,” he added.
