Magut, Cherotich crowned Nairobi City Marathon Champions
In a thrilling display of
athleticism and determination, Eliud Magut clinched victory to become the new
Nairobi City Marathon in a remarkable time of 2:09: 47 on Sunday.
Magut's performance was a testament
to his rigorous training and sheer grit, as he navigated the demanding course
through Nairobi's Express way in the men's 42Km race.
His strategic pacing and explosive
finish ensured he crossed the line well ahead of his competitors Josphat Bett
and Emmanuel Sikuku who clocked 2:10:01 and 2:20:05.
In the women's race, Cynthia
Jerotich stole the spotlight with her exceptional performance in women's 42km
after coming home in two hours and 28.2 seconds.
Jerotich's relentless pace and
tactical brilliance led her to a commanding win, securing the women's title.
She outpaced a strong field of
competitors, Lilian Chebii (2:28:29) and Peris Jerono (2:30:44) placing second
and third respectively.
Magut and Jerotich's wins not only
highlighted their individual prowess but also added to the rich legacy of
Kenyan distance running.
In the Half Marathon, Robert
Kiprop (1:00:56) and Marion Kibor (1:08:55) won the men and women's races
respectively.
Kiprop was followed by Wilson Too and Timothy
Samanayo in second and third slots, while Kibor came ahead of Gladys Chepkurui
and Sharon Kiptugen respectively.
Amos Kipkemoi emerged victorious in
the 10km race, clocking 29 minutes and 4 seconds while Edna Kibiwot won on the
women’ side with a time of 33 minutes, 25 seconds.
Kipkemoi beat Filex Kibet and
Gideon Kipngetich as Fridah Ndinda and Vivian Cherotich settled for second and
third place behind Kibiwot in that order.
Originally scheduled for July 7,
the race attracted over 15,000 participants, an increase of more than 2,000
from last year’s, with the main race starting from 6.45am Nyayo National
Stadium.
The top three finishers in the 42km
race pocketed Sh3.5 million, Sh2.25m and Sh1.5m, respectively.
The top six runners in the 21km
races were rewarded with between Sh150,000 and Sh20,000 in the order, while the
best six runners in the 10km category went home with between Sh100,000 and
Sh7,500, respectively.
Sports Cabinet Secretary Kipchumba
Murkomen, his PS Eng. Peter Tum and Senate Majority Leader Aaron Cheruiyot were
among the national leaders who graced the event.
The top six runners in the 21km
races were rewarded with between Sh150,000 and Sh20,000 in the order in which
they finished, while the best six runners in the 10km category took home with
between Sh100,000 and Sh7,500, respectively.
