Machakos to host 26th edition of Safari 7s rugby tournament in landmark move
Machakos County has officially
launched the 26th edition of the Safari 7s rugby tournament, marking the first
time the prestigious event will be held in Machakos. The tournament will take
place from October 11th to 13th, 2024.
Speaking at the launch, Machakos
Governor Wavinya Ndeti expressed pride in hosting the event, emphasizing that
it represents more than just a sporting competition.
"We are gathered here not
merely as spectators but as a community that cherishes unity, competition, and
growth," she said.
Governor Ndeti highlighted the honour
of hosting teams and fans from across Kenya and around the world, noting
Machakos' famed hospitality and unique attractions.
"This is an opportunity for us
to showcase our county’s warmth, culture, and stunning landscapes," she
continued.
The governor added that the
tournament will promote sports tourism while providing a platform for community
engagement and local talent development.
She also acknowledged the event’s
role in the success of Kenyan teams such as Shujaa, Morans, Lionesses, and
Cubs, who have used Safari 7s as a training ground for international
achievements.
Governor Ndeti thanked the Kenya
Rugby Union and event sponsors for their unwavering support, emphasizing that
the partnership would help build a legacy of rugby, community, and tourism in
the region.
She urged the participating teams to
give their best and encouraged fans to bring energy and passion to the event.
Kenya Rugby Union Vice Chairman
Moses Ndale echoed Governor Ndeti’s sentiments, noting that Safari 7s is one of
the biggest events on the union's calendar. He explained that the decision to
bring the tournament to Machakos was part of an effort to grow the sport at the
grassroots level.
Ndale added that teams from
countries such as the UK, France, Uganda, and Zimbabwe would participate,
further enhancing the tournament’s international appeal.
