Mabwa excludes new coach for Bunyore Starlets, focuses on squad revamp for survival
Bunyore Starlets chairman Moses Mabwa has ruled out the option of hiring a new head coach despite the team having lost two tacticians during the first half of the Kenya Women Premier League (KWPL) season.
Mabwa insists that bringing in a new coach midway through the season would be counterproductive. Instead, he has decided to continue the league without a substantive head coach.
"Our primary goal now is to fight for survival in the KWPL. Employing another coach at this stage may not have the desired impact," Mabwa explained.
With the team sitting in 11th place, with seven points, Mabwa is relying on the existing coaching staff to steer the club clear of relegation.
Assistant coach Veneranda Khasoah and goalkeeper trainer George Abiola are expected to work tirelessly to guide Bunyore Starlets out of the relegation zone before the mid-season break.
Mabwa also highlighted the contributions of Bunyore Starlets' team manager, Rose Mwaniki, who holds a CAF B coaching license, and the voluntary assistance from National Super League's Madira Soccer Assassins coach Francis Muhambe.
"These individuals are working hard to fill any tactical gaps and ensure we stay competitive," Mabwa added, justifying his decision to forgo hiring a new coach for the time being.
Regarding the departure of coach Solomon Masika, Mabwa confirmed that the two had parted ways due to financial disagreements over Masika's "demands."
"Masika was on probation and joined us for two weeks during the Christmas break. The salary he requested was beyond what I could manage, and I communicated this to him. That could have led to his decision to leave," Mabwa explained.
He also noted that the financial strain of meeting travel expenses for away matches made it difficult to reach a deal with Masika.
Despite his decision to not seek a new coach immediately, Mabwa has confirmed that Bunyore Starlets will make use of the transfer window, which opens today, to bolster the squad and address areas of weakness.
In the meantime, this season marks the first time in Bunyore Starlets' history that the club has had more than one coach in a single campaign.
