Mabonga confident ahead of Bungoma Queens' KWPL clash with Kibera Soccer Women
Bungoma Queens' head coach Godffrey Mabonga has expressed confidence ahead of their Kenyan Women Premier League weekend fixture against second-placed Kibera Soccer Women FC.
Mabonga believes the two-week break has provided him with ample time to prepare his team for the upcoming match in Nairobi.
Since their 3-1 victory two weeks ago, the Bungoma-based side has been gearing up for their challenge against the slum girls. Mabonga is confident they can secure maximum points from the fixture.
Mabonga, who took over from Robert Machio just before the start of the season, has guided his team to third place on the log with 20 points, just two points behind leaders Police Bullets and Kibera, while four-time champions Vihiga Queens and Ulinzi Starlets round out the top five with 20 and 18 points, respectively.
“My goal is to win every match, and that hasn’t changed as we prepare to face Kibera on Saturday. They’ve been a tough side recently, and I believe they’ll give us a hard time. We’re aiming to avenge the 2-0 loss in the first round, and I’m confident we can do that if we maintain our focus,” said Mabonga.
Mabonga also hinted at strengthening his squad by signing four new players to help his team’s title pursuit this season.
“Since I joined Bungoma at the start of the season, I haven’t lost any of my players, and my focus has been on ensuring they play according to my plan. We’ve been vulnerable to injuries and red cards, which I’m keen to address in the second leg. I’m urging my players to continue fighting as we aim to make history by winning the title,” he said.
He added, “I also plan to sign four new players to bolster our striking department. In recent matches, I noticed we could have won by a bigger margin, but our strikers wasted several chances. I want to correct that by adding these players when the transfer window opens.”
The only match played last weekend saw Kenya Police face Kisumu All Starlets, with the game ending in a goalless draw at Moi Stadium in Kisumu.
