Limping Gor Mahia fire head coach Neiva after poor start
Reigning and record FKF-Premier champions Gor Mahia have
fired head coach Leonardo Neiva following the club’s lukewarm start to the
2024-25 season.
The club announced the development via an official statement
outlining that the “decision was made after the management invoked a
contractual clause, leading to the end of the coach's tenure effective
immediately.”
Neiva’s poor start to the season was punctuated by a preliminary round exit from the CAF Champions League in the hands of Egyptian giants Al
Ahly and a meager eight points from their opening seven matches of the current.
Despite starting their season late due to continental
assignments, K’Ogalo have flattered to deceive under the Brazilian’s reign,
winning only two of their opening seven games and losing three in the process,
a run that sees them sit 12th on the log.
Their most recent blow was a 2-0 loss against Bandari United
last Wednesday, an outcome that left the club’s fan base irked to the core.
“Following a thorough evaluation and in the interest of
aligning with the club's long-term vision, the management has determined that a
change in leadership is necessary.
“Gor Mahia's Executive Committee and management remain
committed to maintaining the club's competitive edge and upholding its strong
legacy,” read the statement in part.
Gor will now begin an ambitious search for his replacement
amid a chaotic season that has seen the local turn into a shadow of their
former selves.
“The club will begin searching for a new head coach who
embodies the values and aspirations of Gor Mahia Football Club and will bring
renewed energy and strategic insight to the team.
“In the interim, Zedekiah Otieno and Michael Nam will oversee
the team's preparations and responsibilities as the recruitment process for a
new head coach progresses.
“We appreciate the continued support of our fans, sponsors,
and partners during this transition.
“Gor Mahia Football Club is fully committed to delivering a
successful season and will keep supporters updated as new developments unfold.”
