Lamu 7s returns, blending Coastal charm with growing sports culture

The scenic coastal town of Lamu is preparing for the 4th edition of the Lamu 7s rugby tournament, scheduled for November 29–30 on Lamu Island.

Lamu, renowned for its rich history and vibrant culture, is not typically known as a sports hub. However, the annual rugby event has gained popularity, attracting teams from across Kenya and spectators eager to experience the unique mix of sports and coastal hospitality.

Jenipher Waruingi, the event organizer, spoke to Citizen Digital about the excitement and challenges of hosting the tournament in Lamu.

“Lamu may not be traditionally associated with sports, but the enthusiasm from the local community and visiting fans is remarkable. This tournament has become an opportunity to showcase not just the sport but also the beauty and culture of Lamu," Waruingi said.

The tournament debuted on December 24, 2017, at Tiger Grounds in Mpeketoni, with just four teams competing. Mpeketoni Old Boys RFC claimed victory in that inaugural edition.

The second edition held at Kenyatta Primary in Mpeketoni on August 5, 2023, saw the number of teams rise to seven, with Mpeketoni Secondary taking the title. By the third edition on August 3, 2024, 14 teams registered to participate, reflecting the event’s growing appeal.

With each edition, the Lamu 7s has expanded, aiming to inspire young talent in the region and promote a stronger sports culture. The tournament also provides an economic boost through tourism and hospitality, benefiting local businesses.

"We hope that the Lamu 7s will not only foster interest in rugby but also support local businesses and tourism,” Waruingi said, expressing optimism about the tournament’s positive impact on the local community.

This year’s edition is expected to attract even more teams than previous years, underscoring the tournament's growing prominence.
