Zetech Sparks head coach Harriet Fakhir believes her side is firmly on course to challenge for the Kenyan Women Premier League title this season following an impressive run of results.

The varsity side climbed to second position on the log with 31 points — level with league leaders Kenya Police Bullets — after being awarded a walkover against Kisumu All Starlets. The Kisumu-based side failed to honour Saturday’s fixture at Zetech University Main Campus in Thika.

The defending champions Kenya Police have played 13 matches — four fewer than Zetech — due to postponements involving Ulinzi Starlets and Vihiga Queens. Several of their players are currently in camp with the national team ahead of the upcoming Women's Africa Cup of Nations (WAFCON) tournament in March.

“We were awarded the three points and two goals by the Federation, but we would have preferred to play the fixture and score more goals,” said Fakhir.

“I’m happy that we have risen to second position, and that’s the focus we want to maintain in all our remaining fixtures as we aim to win the title.

“We understand Police have four games in hand, but that’s no guarantee they will win all of them. I’m urging my players to continue fighting for glory at the end of the season. I’m also pleased to see our new signings settling in well — that’s a positive sign for the future.”

Zetech now turn their attention to a weekend clash against Trinity Starlets.

“Our next task is facing Trinity, a very tough side currently fifth on the log. We will give our best to ensure we collect maximum points. I thank God we have no injury concerns and that all players are in good shape,” she added.

Elsewhere, at Marist University in Karen, Kibera Soccer Women edged Madira Soccer Assassins 2-1, courtesy of goals from Grace Wekesa and Esse Akida.

At Mawego Polytechnic, Gideon Starlets and Bungoma Queens played out a goalless draw.

Meanwhile, league newcomers Kayole Starlets secured a convincing 4-1 win over Kisped Queens at Mamboleo Grounds in Kisumu. Faith Naliaka (8’), Eunice Nabwoba (38’), Lavyne Achola (82’), and Lyndah Kihara (90’) were on target for Kayole.
