KWPL: Ulinzi Starlets thump hapless Mombasa Olympic to get season on track
Football Kenya Federation (FKF) Women’s Cup champions Ulinzi
Starlets jumped to seventh position in the Kenya Women Premier League log after
thumping Coast-based Mombasa Olympics 4-0 in a rescheduled KWPL match played on
Wednesday afternoon at Ruaraka Grounds in Nairobi.
Forward Mercy Airo was the match's star after bagging a brace as
Lucy Nato and Cindy Ngaira scored one each to complete the win.
This is a third loss for Mombasa Olympics in their opening six
matches, having registered a single win and two draws as Ulinzi, who are
gearing up to face the newbies Trinity Starlets FC at Ruaraka Stadium on
Sunday, have won twice, drawn thrice, and lost once.
Speaking after the match, coach Oyoo blamed fatigue for having
caused their loss as he promised a good show on Sunday against the champions
Kenya Police Bullets at the MPesa Foundation stadium in Thika.
“I can say our loss was totally caused by fatigue. We left
Mombasa at 11 PM on Tuesday and arrived today at 10 AM on Wednesday.
My girls did not have time to rest, and they even had no time to
shower; instead, they rushed directly to the stadium; how are you expecting us
to win the match with all that setback?
“The weather also didn’t favor us because it was a bit rainy.
Ulinzi was very good today; they scored two very fast goals, which affected our
concentration in the game.
“That has been done; our focus now is to win our Sunday fixture
against Police Bullets. We have an advantage because we are not going back to
Mombasa; we will camp here in Nairobi, waiting for the fixture.
Kibera Soccer Women FC are still leading the log with 13 points,
one above second-placed Trinity Starlets FC, as Kenya Police Bullets FC, Vihiga
Queens FC, and Bungoma Queens FC wrap up the top five with 11, 11and 10 points
in that order.
