The
Kenya Volleyball Federation (KVF) has called on the Ministry of Sports to waive
or significantly reduce the high costs of hiring indoor venues, citing the financial
strain on clubs and the federation.
KVF
Deputy President Paul Bitok is leading the charge, urging the government to
ease the burden, particularly as teams gear up for the upcoming playoffs.
“I
would like to appeal to the government to offer us favorable rates as we
approach the playoffs. It is incredibly costly for KVF to pay such hefty sums
just to secure the Kasarani Indoor Gymnasium for a single day.
“We kindly
request that the Sports Cabinet and Principal Secretary review and lower these
charges,” Bitok emphasized.
Currently,
KVF is required to pay Sh60,000 per day to use the facility, which has put
clubs under immense financial pressure.
Teams
must access the venue frequently with a packed season ahead, including multiple
tournaments and key league matches.
“To
sustain competitive volleyball in Kenya, we need affordable access to top-tier
venues. Sh60,000 per day is excessive.
“We
are requesting a reduction to at least Sh20,000, which would be more manageable
for clubs and the federation,” Bitok added.
With
Kenyan volleyball gaining momentum internationally, reducing facility fees
could be a game-changer, ensuring clubs focus on performance rather than
financial struggles.
