Kubu, Siketi earn maiden Shujaa call-ups ahead of Vancouver 7s

Kubu, an established linchpin for the 15s side Simbas, has finally broken into the sevens side while fast-rising Siketi gets his first taste of Shujaa after impressing in last year’s National Sevens Circuit as well as this season’s Kenya Cup.

Head coach Kevin Wambua has maintained majority of the players who have turned out for the side recently, with co-captains Samuel Asati and George Ooro tasked with leading the team once more, alongside former captains Tonny Omondi and Vincent Onyala.

High-rising Floyd Wabwire who showed flashes of pace and brilliance in Perth by scoring a try against USA makes the squad, together with seasoned veteran Dennis Abukuse, Kevin Wekesa and Brian Tanga.

Shujaa will be again reliant on creative brilliance of Nygel Amaitsa and sheer speed of Patrick Odongo as William Mwanji completes the squad.

Kenya is in Pool A alongside Olympic champions France, Perth 7s winners Argentina and Great Britain.

Shujaa collected three points to finish tenth at the Perth Sevens last month, maintaining their overall ninth position in the 12-team Series on 14 points.

With only three tournaments left before the finale, the team face an uphill battle to break into the top eight, a crucial benchmark to qualify for the season finale in Los Angeles on May 3-4.
