Despite
falling short in their quest to defend the Mombasa County crown, Serani
Secondary School’s boys’ football team is charging forward with renewed
purpose, targeting coastal glory in the upcoming regional championships.
Head
coach Swaleh Abdalla, popularly known as “Sunda,” believes the defeat in the
county final against Tononoka Secondary has only fueled his team's hunger to
excel in the Coast Region showdown and secure a spot at the nationals.
“Losing
the Mombasa final lit a fire in the boys. They're more determined than ever to
clinch the coastal title. We may be going in as runners-up, which puts us in a
tough group, but we're not intimidated,” Sunda remarked confidently.
The
coach also revealed that the team is now at full strength, with previously
unavailable players returning to the fold ahead of the crucial regional
battles.
“We’ve
prepared well. Those who were sidelined due to illness are back in training,
and the full squad is ready. We’re not just aiming to win—we’re going there
to represent the Coast at nationals,” he added.
On
the other side of the rivalry, Tononoka Secondary—the newly crowned Mombasa
County champions—are not resting on their laurels. Head coach Juma Ali
“Kalato” is expecting a familiar showdown.
“We’re
fully prepared. There are new teams in the mix, and their playing styles are
unfamiliar, but I believe we’ll meet Serani again in the regional final,”
Kalato predicted.
The
Coast Region championships are scheduled to kick off on Thursday, July 4, in
Mpeketoni, Lamu County.
In
the opening fixtures, Serani Secondary will take on Mkowe Secondary, and then
Tononoka Secondary will face Kiunga Secondary.
