KPA land in Zanzibar for Basketball League-Africa Zone 5 Qualifiers
Defending champions Kenya Ports Authority (KPA) Wednesday landed in Zanzibar for the Women's Basketball League-Africa Zone Five qualifiers, set to tip off this Sunday.
Nine teams will battle for a chance to reach the Africa Women’s Basketball League finals scheduled for December in Dakar, Senegal.
Head coach Anthony Ojukwu remains optimistic they have had great preparations, and he believes they are ready to retain the Zone Five title.
“We've had good preparations, starting on October 7. We focused on improving the players' fitness, and I'm happy with where we are now,” Ojukwu said.
“Our tactics are in place, and I believe we are ready to reclaim our title. The players are motivated, there are no injuries, and all 17 registered players are available for selection.”
The Dockers made history last year as the first Kenyan team to reach the final of the Africa Women’s Basketball League in Alexandria, Egypt.
They lost to the hosts Alexandria Sporting Club 59-103 during the final, making history as the first Kenyan team to finish on podium since they started their first continental trip in 1998.
Also representing Kenya in Zanzibar are the Equity Bank Hawks, and will face tough opposition from Egypt’s Al Ahly, Rwanda’s APR, and REG.
