Kenya Ports Authority women’s basketball team head coach, Anthony Ojukwu, has heaped praise on his girls for their win against stubborn Zetech Sparks, despite facing a tough competition from the students.

Despite starting slow, the Dockers managed to hammer the visitors 76-69 at their home court, Makande Gymnasium, Mombasa in the National Women’s Basketball Premier League match over the weekend.

“The game was good but tough, but I am glad we managed to get victory; as you know Zetech is a very competitive team, with young players, which has pace and they really tried and held us in the first half.

I am glad we managed to get a win, at the end of the four quarters, and our tactics worked for us; both defensively and offensively. We played well though with small mistakes here and there, but it is something we are going to work on, as we prepare for our last game in the first leg,” Ojukwu said.

On his part Zetech coach Maurice Obilo hailed his technical bench for getting the girls in shape

“They played well, and we are happy with the results, we know KPA is a big team who are professionals and therefore we cannot demand more from the kids, they already gave us 100 % which is what we normally request from them.

“We always tell them to give their best and forget about the results, and that’s why we improve each and every game; play to your level best, and let the result take care of itself,” Obilo said.

The loss saw Zetech’s 100 percent winning streak come to an end, with two games to go, in the first leg. Zetech have now played nine games, winning eight and losing one, to amass 17 points. KPA finished the first leg at the top with 21 points, after winning 10 matches and losing just one.

Grace Irebu was the star of the show for KPA, netting 16 points, followed by Selina Okumu who bagged 12 points.
