Athletics Kenya (AK) Director of Youth Development Barnaba Korir has pledged to extend successful AK programs to other sports federations, if Team New Dawn secures victory in the upcoming National Olympic Committee of Kenya elections, scheduled for April 24, 2025.

Speaking in an interview on the Hot 96 Breakfast Show, Korir, who is vying for the 1st Vice President position under presidential hopeful Shadrack Maluki, emphasized the need to adopt proven Athletics Kenya development strategies across federations to accelerate the growth of sports in Kenya.

“There are many programs that are working at Athletics Kenya that I feel we need to implement in other federations. So if Team New Dawn gets elected, there are many things and programs that can be introduced in different federations that will add value to the growth of sports in the country,” he said.

Korir, who also serves as the AK Nairobi Branch Chairman, revealed that preparations for this year’s Kip Keino Classic are well underway, with the event set to take place on May 31 at Nyayo Stadium.

He said the association was impressed by the support they are receiving from the government and the private sector.

“Preparations are in top gear ahead of the event. We are very pleased with the support we are receiving from the government and many stakeholders that has really been encouraging, and if that continues, our vision is to make it a gold series which is very possible,” he added.

Korir also reiterated Kenya’s intent to bid for the 2029 World Athletics Championships, expressing confidence in the country’s ability to host the global showpiece, provided infrastructure is prioritized.

“That is still our vision for the nation; having the World Championships in the country. If all goes well and Kasarani (stadium) is ready, we are going to win the bid to host the World Championships. That one I am confident of,” he stated.
