KNBL: Obilo Tips Zetech Sparks To Dethrone KPA
Zetech Sparks head coach Maurice Obilo is confident his
team will thrive in the Kenya National Basketball League (KNBL) next season by
building on their impressive second-place finish in the just-concluded season.
Sparks' fairytale run in their debut season saw them
finish as runners-up after falling 3-0 to powerhouses Kenya Ports Authority
(KPA) in the 2022/23 finals at the Makande Gymnasium in Mombasa.
"The season was amazing despite having some
challenges, took longer than expected, but the students achieved something they
have been working on for several years," Obilo said.
With pre-season training underway, Obilo is focused on
enhancing individual skill development, opting to improve each player's
basketball before the team embarks on group training.
"We are working on individual skills, just
improving on individual basketball before we work on our team training, we have
at least a month before we start our games," he said.
Coach Obilo has confirmed that he has no intentions of
signing new external players. Instead, he will be selecting talents from the
development team within the school.
"We have a development team in the school;
therefore, we will not go out to sign other players," he explained.
Recognizing their accomplishments from the previous
season, Obilo has acknowledged the girl's achievements and progress,
considering their short history in the basketball league.
"It was a debut season, and they went to the finals
to challenge the defending champion. It is something special; we don't take it
for granted.
"As much as we have been in this league for a very
short time, we have achieved what so many institutions have been unable to
achieve." He emphasized.
Zetech's journey to the premier league finals makes them the second university since independence to achieve such a feat alongside United States International University (USIU) Tigers in 2015.
