Defending Kenya National Basketball League (KNBL) champions Nairobi City
Thunder pulled off a dramatic 80-73 win over rivals Kenya Ports Authority (KPA)
in a high-stakes clash at the Nyayo Stadium Gymnasium.
The match pitted the two favourite teams to win this season`s title in a
duel that tested the might and the tactical ingenuity of respective benches.
In their first meeting since Thunder swept KPA 3-0 in the 2024 finals,
the Dockers came out guns blazing, taking
a strong 25-16 lead at the end of the first quarter.
The third quarter ended in a stalemate (18-18), setting the stage for a
tense final period.
With less than three minutes to go, KPA led by 11 points and seemed in
control, until Thunder turned to star forward Tyler Ongwae for redemption.
The experienced 6'7" player, who has plied his
trade in Germany, Denmark, and the Basketball Africa League, delivered when
it mattered most, drilling in three-pointers, driving
hard to the basket, and sinking crucial free throws.
He sparked a late rally that saw Thunder level the game and force
overtime.
Key to their comeback were points off turnovers of 18-2 and
fast-break conversions of 22-8,
showcasing their tactical edge when it mattered
most.
Despite trailing for most of the game, Thunder showed their championship mettle, leaving KPA to rue a missed opportunity in what was a gripping KNBL showdown.
