Uganda’s Stephen Kissa shocked Kenya’s Daniel Ebenyo to claim the men’s title at the Tata Steel World 25K in Kolkata, India, marking his first international victory in five years.

Kissa crossed the finish line in 1:12:33, narrowly beating Ebenyo, who clocked 1:12:37 after a fierce battle in the final kilometers.

The race began at a brisk pace, with a lead pack that included Kissa, Ebenyo, Benson Kipruto, and Ethiopia’s Haymanot Alew.

The defining moment came at the 20K mark, where Kissa surged ahead. Despite Ebenyo’s attempt to close the gap, Kissa’s final kick secured the USD 15,000 top prize.

“This victory means a lot. India is a beautiful country, and I felt strong today,” said Kissa.

Ebenyo, reflecting on his second-place finish, said, “I was tired after the Chicago Marathon, but I’m proud of my effort. I’ll take some rest and come back stronger.”

Kenya’s Anthony Kipchirchir finished third in 1:12:55, securing his first major podium finish. Kipruto and Asbel Rutto completed the top five, demonstrating Kenya’s depth in long-distance racing.

Kebede Retains Women’s Title as Chepngeno Excels

Ethiopia’s Sutume Kebede defended her women’s title in dominant fashion, clocking 1:19:17 despite recent health challenges. Kenya’s Viola Chepngeno finished second in 1:19:44, with Bahrain’s Desi Jisa taking third in 1:21:29.

Kebede, the 2023 champion and world record holder over 25K, broke away after the 23K mark to secure her win. “I’m happy to win again, though I hoped to break the course record,” she said.

Chepngeno started strong but couldn’t match Kebede’s final push. “It was a tough race, but I’m proud to finish second against such a strong field,” she said.
