The 2022 Commonwealth Games medalist Wiseman Were, was all smiles after he stormed to victory in the men’s 400 metres hurdles at the Kip Keino Classic, defending his title in style.
In a high-octane race packed with elite talent, it was
African Championship silver medalist Tisang Kemorena who set the early pace,
leading the field until the final 100 metres. Kemorena clocked a personal best
and new national record of 48.59 seconds, showcasing his growing dominance in
the event.
But it was Were who stole the spotlight in the final
stretch, unleashing a powerful finish to clinch the win with a time of 48.34 seconds,
a world championship qualifying mark. The victory marks a significant
improvement for the Kenyan hurdler, who had shown promising form earlier this
month at the Athletics Kenya Championships.
“I feel great about the race,” Were said after his win. “I
had trained well and was focused on lowering my time, especially after
competing at the Botswana Golden Grand Prix in April and the AK meet. Today’s
result is a reflection of that work.”
The podium was completed by fellow Kenyan Rotich Kipkorir,
who placed third with a commendable time of 49.17 seconds.
With the World Athletics Championships set to take place in
Tokyo from September 13- 21, and the qualifying standard set at 48.50 seconds,
Were’s performance not only secures his ticket to the global stage but also
positions him as a serious contender.
Looking ahead, Were has his sights set on the upcoming
Diamond League series, aiming to fine-tune his rhythm and competitiveness ahead
of the Tokyo showdown.
