Kenya’s Mercy Oketch lit up the track at the Kip Keino Classic with a sensational performance in the women’s 400 metres, breaking the national record previously held by Mary Moraa. Oketch clocked a blistering 50.14 seconds, a personal best and a world championship qualifying time.
The electrifying race was one of the highlights of the meet,
with Oketch holding off strong competition to secure the win. Uganda’s Leni
Shida finished a close second in 50.52 seconds, also setting a personal best.
The race was so competitive that all top four finishers recorded lifetime
bests, a testament to the intensity and depth of the field.
Speaking after the race, a Oketch credited her triumph to a
new level of commitment in training.
“This win means a lot to me,” she said. “I’ve been pushing
myself beyond the 400 metres, focusing on building strength and endurance. That
extra work is paying off.”
Oketch’s performance not only earns her national glory but
also punches her ticket to the World Athletics Championships, set to be held in
Tokyo from September 13 to 21, with the qualifying standard set at 50.95
seconds.
Despite the magnitude of her achievement, Oketch is staying
grounded. She revealed that she’s already eyeing her next race, set for June
7th in Uganda, as part of her preparation build-up for the global stage.
