Victor Kipchirchir defended his Eldoret City Marathon title for the second time in a row to make it a hat-trick, after cutting the tape in 2:12:50, ahead of Felix Mutai (2:31:22) and Evans Kipruto (2:34:16) who completed the podium bracket.
Kipchirchir said this year's course was “not that hard,” comparing
to previous editions he has competed in, having rained early morning in
Eldoret.
"I'm very delighted for defending my title, there is not
much secret to my success, it's just hard work during training," said
Kipchirchir.
“I came into the race with a minor injury so I was a little bit
unsure, but after the 33km I became confident I was going to win,” revealed Kipchirchir.
West Pokot's Emily Chepkemoi took the women's crown in a time of 2:30:14.
She was followed closely by Akeno Martha in a time of 2:31:22
while Joan Jepkosgei finished third, in 2:34:16
Chepkemoi who trains at Kapsait Athletics camp said she was to
participate in last week’s Paris Marathon, but after failing to secure a visa she
opted for the Eldoret City Marathon.
"At first it was hard for me due to poor weather but things
changed for the better after covering 15km. I had prepared well for it,"
said Chepkemoi.
Uasin Gishu Governor Jonathan Bii said the race is testament to the commitment of the County in nurturing talents.
“Many aspiring athletes have risen to the international stage
following their success in such local competitions. We must therefore keep
doing this…” said Bii.
