Kip Keino Classic: American sprint sensation Bednarek floors home boy Omanyala at Nyayo
Olympic 200m silver medalist Kenneth Bednarek from USA
clocked 9.91 sec in the 100m showdown to destroy a star-studded field to bag
gold as the curtains came down on the fifth edition of Kip Keino Classic held
Saturday at the Nyayo National Stadium.
Bednarek floored the African and Commonwealth 100m champion
Ferdinand Omanyala who failed to register a podium finish while performing on home soil, managing a distant fifth place finish on 10.03, one spot ahead
of compatriot Mark Otieno Odhiambo who finished last, at position six, timing
10.22.
Liberian star Emmanuael Matadi settled for silver after
timing 9.99 while Great Britain’s Azu Jeremiah took home bronze in 10.00.
The American sprint sensation who had ranked Omanyala as a
worthy rival improved on his performance on the last edition where he had bagged
silver.
Meanwhile, in the 800m, the world 800m silver medalist
Emmanuel Wanyonyi staged an energetic race timing 1:43.57 to claim gold ahead
of Chemingwa Aron Kemei who clocked 1:44.10 for silver as Ferguson Rotich
pulled up at 1:44.90 to settle for bronze.
Wanyonyi termed the good show as ‘a polish’ as he prepares
for the Paris Olympics.
“I was not sure if I could win this race. I thank God and
I’m really happy. This confirms my anticipation for the good performance during
the upcoming Olympics. I’m well set and hope for the best.”
Wanyonyi rose to global acclamation after storming the World
U20 title in Nairobi in 2021, aged only 17, in a championship record of
1:43.76.
