Kimanzi wary of tough battle as Stars close in on Mapinduzi Cup semis
Harambee
Stars head coach Francis Kimanzi has expressed confidence but remains cautious
ahead of Kenya's final group stage match in the Mapinduzi Cup against hosts
Zanzibar.
As
the tournament heads into the knockout stages, the high-stakes encounter will
determine the group leaders.
On
Tuesday, Kenya claimed an impressive 2-0 victory over Tanzania’s Kilimanjaro
Stars thanks to second-half goals from Boniface Muchiri and Ryan Ogam, taking
the top spot in the group with four points.
They
are level on points with Burkina Faso, who trail on goal difference, while
Zanzibar sits third with three points. Tanzania is yet to register a point.
Speaking
after the victory, Kimanzi acknowledged the challenge of facing the hosts.
“Playing
Zanzibar will be one of the toughest battles we’ve faced in this tournament.
They are the hosts, and the atmosphere will be electric.
“We
have four points, and they have three, so there’s everything to play for.
However, I believe we are growing mentally and building our character after
every match.
“The
unique environment will inspire our players, and I’m really looking forward to
a competitive fight.”
Balancing
Rotation and Intensity
Kimanzi
highlighted the need to rotate his squad to manage the demanding schedule and
the challenges posed by playing on artificial turf.
“We’ve
had to adjust our lineup for each game due to the tight match schedule and
field conditions. Playing on artificial turf three times in less than a week is
tough on the players.
“That’s
why squad rotation is crucial to ensure we maintain the players’ fitness and
avoid injuries. This is a select team, and every player is ready to contribute.
“We
carefully monitor their physical reactions after each match.”
Building
Character for Success
The
coach also remains optimistic about Kenya’s chances of winning the Mapinduzi
Cup, emphasizing that the focus is on the team’s growth rather than immediate
results.
“We’re
taking it one step at a time. The fans should continue supporting the team
because they can see we are developing a special competitive character with
every game.
“It’s
not just about the trophy but about the process of building a team with
resilience and determination. If we stay on this path, the rewards will come.”
Preparations
for CHAN
Kimanzi
also shared insights on Kenya’s preparations for the African Nations
Championship (CHAN), which the country will co-host with Uganda and Tanzania.
“We
are still in the early stages of assessing players for CHAN, but I’m confident
we will have a very competitive team for the tournament.
“The
players are showing great mental strength and character, which is promising.
We’re focusing on building without pressure, intending to create a strong and
cohesive squad.”
As
Harambee Stars gear up for the crucial showdown against Zanzibar on Friday at 7
p.m., fans and players alike remain hopeful for a strong finish in the group
stage and a shot at the title.
