Kimanzi wants more from Wazalendo despite weekend win

Wazalendo head coach Fidhelis Kimanzi says there is still a
lot of work to do for his side to reach the level he wants, despite their win
on Sunday against Mombasa Sports Club at City Park.
This was their return leg of the Kenya Hockey Union (KHU) Premier
League, where Wazalendo thrashed won 3-0, having shared a goalless draw during
their reverse leg early June in Mombasa.
Midfielder’s Dennis Mwanzo, Mathews Mutiso and forward
Sutcliffe Usagi were on target for the winners.
Kimanzi was open that his players did not stick to the plan
they had for the match.
“The game wasn’t good to be honest, but
the results favored us,” said Kimanzi.
“The players failed to follow our strategy we had
planned to execute against MSC. There was a bit of disconnect, as some players had
been out injured and in their come back, they were not able to play at the level
I expected. However, there were a lot of positives from the players,” he
explained.
This was the second match Wazalendo to win in their
past nine matches, having drawn thrice and losing four, ruling them out of the
title race.
The result saw them move a slot ahead to fourth on the 10-team
standings with 22 points, while MSC remained bottom with six points.
Kimanzi who has been away for about two years with the
national team, says his aim is to restore the team to the form they were
in, in the year 2019.
“Basically, our performance level has gone down compared to
2019. My role is to restore the club to the standard they are required to play.
My responsibility is to restore the previous confidence and change a few
tactics for betterment,” he added.
In women’s league, Strathmore University won the league
with two matches to go, after defeating their varsity rival United States
University (USIU) 4-2, in a tight varsity derby staged at City Park.
The results saw them extend the lead with 28 points,
meaning their closest competitors Lakers and Blazers cannot catch up with them,
even if they win their remaining two matches.
In Kisumu, Lakers wrapped up the league in high
spirits after trouncing DFG Wolverines 3-0.
